Spintires, Awesome Big Truck Off-Roading Game Needs Your Support
Big Rig Cargo Hauling Game Rewards Skill, Strategy Over Speed
Most car or truck video games are based on pedal-to-the-metal speed, catching big air, and evading the cops. If you're looking for a game that rewards patience, finesse, and strategy, Oovee Game Studios out of the U.K. might have the game just for you. Called Spintires, the game is based in '80s Soviet Russia, and consists of loading payloads of logs onto awesome Soviet-era large trucks (including the incredibly epic ZIL-135 8x8) and delivering them to the shipping port for export.
Then, as now, in many parts of Russia, road infrastructure is poor, and navigating the muddy, mucky roads is part of the game. Additional lifelike action comes in the form of Oovee's VeeEngine vertex-texture-fetch technology that simulates the deformation of terrain under the tires of the heavy trucks. As noted, Spintires is not simply a race against the clock. Skill points are rewarded on the basis of successful delivery of cargo, minimal damage to cargo, and fuel usage (less is better). Bonus points are awarded for discovery of secret crates, and territory covered.
Of course, what good would skill and bonus points be if you couldn't use them for something? To that end, points can be used to purchase auxiliary lighting, a turbocharger, added cargo capacity, a winch, horns, a tire deflation system, and if you advance far enough, new trucks.
Currently, Spintires is about halfway toward its 40,000 GBP (about $60,000 U.S.) goal on Kickstarter. Deadline is June 13, so there's plenty of time to go to help put this game over the top, and on its way to being on your PC or mobile device. Currently, the game is slated for Windows only, but with further funding and development, a Mac version could be created, as well as a game optimized for mobile devices.
