General Motors Making OnStar RemoteLink Mobile App Free for Five Years

Functions Available Separately from Other OnStar Services

Jun 5, 2013
OnStar was introduced by General Motors in 1996 on a handful of Cadillac models, but has now become synonymous with the company's offerings as a whole. Through the years, the mission and strategy of OnStar has changed, from being a built-in replacement for a mobile phone to utilizing the portability and ubiquity of mobile devices to add convenience and features for customers. Today, GM announced that OnStar's RemoteLink Key Fob Services program would be standard for five years on 2014 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac OnStar-equipped models compatible with the RemoteLink feature.

The RemoteLink feature will be offered to customers even if they decline other OnStar paid services. The features can be accessed by downloading a free smartphone app available for Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone. Among the features offered on the RemoteLink app are remote starting, locking and unlocking, oil life monitor, fuel level, tire pressure, average fuel economy, and one-touch OnStar Advisor connection.
Additional paid services available through OnStar include Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Hands-Free calling, Vehicle Diagnostics and turn-by-turn navigation. OnStar capability is built-in to most GM vehicles sold in North America. Earlier this year, GM announced a partnership with AT&T to offer built-in 4G hotspot capability in 2015 model-year vehicles.
