2015 Land Rover Freelander Rendered

New Compact Model Shows Evoque Influence in More Practical Package

Jun 18, 2013
Land Rover has been on the throttle lately with new-product introductions, with the all-new 2013 Range Rover unveiled to critical acclaim and the new 2014 Range Rover Sport hot on its heels. Both those models follow the phenomenal success of the compact Range Rover Evoque, our 2012 SUV of the Year winner.

Although we've gotten some indication of what Land Rover's future product lineup might look like in terms of offerings and configurations, thanks to Britain's Auto Express, we have a better visual representation, specifically, the next-generation 2015 Freelander, currently sold in the U.S. as the Land Rover LR2.
The rendering published by AE is a combination of cues and influences from the current LR2, the Range Rover Evoque, and a hint of the new 2014 Range Rover Sport. Rather than the Evoque's steeply tapered roofline with a short greenhouse, the new Freelander has a more upright profile, likely resulting in considerably roomier cabin than the snug Evoque's. A five-passenger and longer-wheelbase seven-passenger model are expected, with the latter potentially being the only model sold in the U.S. market.
Unlike the full-size Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, the new Freelander is expected to use a steel body and chassis to keep costs down. The current 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 which the LR2 received in 2013 is expected to carry over, this time mated to the ZF nine-speed transmission, which the Evoque will get for the 2014 model year.
