2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Official Safety Vehicle of 2013 Pikes Peak Hillclimb
Support Vehicle Joins Second-Generation Electric Race Car at Event
It may not have the same popularity and notoriety as the Daytona 500 or Indy 500, but the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb is the second-oldest motor race series in the U.S. after the Indianapolis 500. The 12.42-mile uphill climb has been somewhat civilized over the years with paving, but there are still plenty of open curves with no barriers, so the danger factor is real. To support the event staff, and come to the assistance of teams and drivers in need, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander is the official safety vehicle of the 91st Pikes Peak International Hillclimb.
The Outlander will be joined by a Lancer Evolution sedan as a supplementary safety vehicle. Although mostly stock, the Evo is outfitted with specialized equipment from some well-known aftermarket accessory manufacturers, including AEM, BBS, Cobb Tuning, DC Sports, Kenwood, and Muellerized Suspension Tuning.
Mitsubishi is also the event's presenting sponsor this year, and will field a two-car team, including a second-generation all-electric racer, dubbed MiEV Evolution II, which will be driven by two-time Dakar Rally winner Hiroshi Masuoka and six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion Greg Tracy. Last year's i-MiEV Evolution n entry came in second place in the electric car class.
