1943 Willys MB Jeep Returns to Toledo

Italian Journalists, Enthusiasts Document Journey in Blog

Jun 24, 2013
Since the model and the brand's inception more than 70 years ago, the spiritual home of Jeep has always been Toledo, Ohio. Most of the brands' models, especially for the U.S. market, are produced there, including the Wrangler and upcoming 2014 Jeep Cherokee . So it was an appropriate destination for Vittorio Argento, an Italian Jeep enthusiast, who, in addition to being military vehicle history buff, is a major in the Italian Air Force Reserve.

Argento teamed up with Gregory and Livia Alegi to document the Willys MB's journey from Naples, Italy, to New York and a road trip from the Big Apple all the way to its spiritual home in Toledo. In a bi-lingual blog (Italian and English), Argento documented the different stops along the way, culminating in the arrival in Toledo, where it was applauded by factory workers.

Argento has owned the Jeep since 1984, when he purchased it from an Italian geologist, who bought it from a Catholic priest in 1959. The Jeep needed substantial restoration work to bring it up to 95-percent original condition, including a hunt for a matching frame, which he found in 1998 in a barn near Rome. The Jeep was reportedly used by the 10th Mountain Division stationed near Florence during World War II, which is still an active division based out of Fort Drum, New York.
