Volkswagen Amarok Wins Auto Express' 2013 Best Pick-Up Award
Second Consecutive Win for VW's Midsize Hauler
The Volkswagen Amarok is one of those trucks we've admired from afar, not being on sale in the U.S., where our effective choices in the midsize market are the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier. But the Amarok has been on sale in Europe since the 2010 model year and has receive steady updates since its introduction, giving it more power, torque, features, and refinement. The continuous refinement of the formula prompted the editors of the U.K.'s Auto Express to bestow its Best Pick-Up award to the Amarok for the second year in a row.
VW recently released the U.K.-exclusive Amarok edition , following the Canyon edition that debuted earlier this year. All Amaroks are powered by VW's 2.0-liter TDI I-4 turbodiesel in various states of tune. Originally built in Argentina, Amaroks for the European market have been made since May 2012 at Volkswagen's Hannover, Germany, commercial vehicle plant, reducing waiting times for the popular pickup.
Volkswagen has consistently said it has no plans to bring the Amarok to the U.S. market, and in light of the currently moribund midsize pickup market, we don't blame them. But with new GM midsize models just around the corner, segment sales could heat up once again. And as sales-hungry as VW says it is, we could see the Amarok being an interesting entry in what's become a somewhat stale segment lately.
