Video: Ram Trucks Chief Engineer Talks About 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
Two-Minute Tease Whets Our Appetite for Ram's Half-Ton Diesel
Not since the similarly named, but very different Ford F-150 EcoBoost burst onto the full-size truck scene in 2011, has there been so much excitement and anticipation of a new truck powertrain. Yes, we're talking about the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the first half-ton diesel truck in almost three decades. Ram Trucks chief engineer Mike Cairns starts out by saying how many people have asked him "when are you going to put a diesel in a 1500?"
Nothing talked about by Cairns is a great secret, as power output figures of 240-hp and 420-lb-ft (same as the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with the engine) have already been released. But fuel economy, towing and payload capacity have not yet been publicly released. Cairns says the truck and powertrain are undergoing final validation testing to establish those benchmarks.
Unfortunately, there's no audio of the V-6 diesel running, but we've been promised by an insider source at Chrysler that footage of a running Ram EcoDiesel, complete with sound, may be coming shortly. Ram gives itself a little pat on the back by pointing out its trifecta of awards for 2013, with North American Truck of the Year, Motor Trend's 2013 Truck of the Year, and the 2013 Truck of Texas.
