Custom-Built Off-Road Retro Rod Proves It's Built Ford Tough

Edward A. SanchezJul 22, 2013
When people typically think of off-road vehicles, the Ford Model A may not be the first specimen that comes to mind, but it was the perfect platform for Pennsylvania resident Tim Lenig. To be honest, "platform" might be a generous description, since the only items authentically Model A on his homebuilt beast are the grille, headlights, and hood. 4Wheel & Off-Road magazine's Fred Williams, also a Keystone State native, traveled to the Line Mountain off-road race park to take a closer look at the retro mudder and a more modern-day cousin.
The rest of the running gear is modified 1973 Ford Bronco. Although it might not have long-travel coil-overs like more modern off-roaders, the rest of the hardware on the rig is built to play hard, with a Ford 347-cubic-inch stroked V-8, C4 transmission, Dana 20 transfer case, Yukon Gear axles, an air locker, and Fox Shocks.

Williams then took a look at King of the Hammers winner Eric Miller's custom LS7-powered buggy with all the latest off-road hardware. While Miller's modern-day rig may run circles around the old Model A, it still owes a debt of gratitude to the earlier off-road pioneers like Lenig who built the trailblazing forerunners of today's innovative off-road scene.
