Hyundai Sells 1 Millionth Santa Fe in the U.S.

Hyundai's Midsize SUV Reaches Milestone After 13 Years

Edward A. SanchezAug 1, 2013
For mainstream automotive models, reaching the "one millionth" milestone is a big one. For some, it's reached sooner than others. One million is approximately 3 years] worth of Toyota Camry sales, and less than 2 year's worth of Ford F-Series truck sales. For the Hyundai Santa Fe, it took 13 years. And although it might not have class-crushing sales volumes, that doesn't make the Santa Fe any less significant for Hyundai.
For the decade following Hyundai's 1986 introduction to the U.S. market, the brand was largely characterized by low-cost economy models, most notably the Excel subcompact, followed closely thereafter in the U.S. market by the Sonata midsize sedan. The Santa Fe arrived as the company's third product in 2000 as a 2001 model, It dovetailed with the company's renewed emphasis on quality and customer satisfaction, as evidenced by then then-unprecedented 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Its bold, unconventional styling made it stand out from other crossover offerings of the day.
Today, the Santa Fe is offered in short-wheelbase Santa Fe Sport and long-wheelbase, three-row Santa Fe trims. The Santa Fe Sport is built at Hyundai/Kia's West Point, Georgia, plant, while the Santa Fe is built in Asan, South Korea.
