Suzuki iV-4 Concept: What Could Have Been the New Grand Vitara

Concept Previews New Small SUV Model for Europe, Other Markets

Edward A. SanchezJul 31, 2013
Now that Suzuki has officially turned off the lights and locked the doors in the U.S., this look at the upcoming iV-4 Concept to be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show is a glimpse at what could be the next-generation Grand Vitara for the rest of the world, and what that model could have been in the U.S., had Suzuki not decided to pull up its stakes and lower the flag here.
We have little solid information on the iV-4, other than a brief description and a frontal and side silhouette. Suzuki calls the iV-4 a "new concept for a personal compact SUV," and says it is an "indication of the direction which will be taken with the future model to be added to the company's renowned SUV line-up."

As you can see from the side profile silhouette, the shape is conventional two-box small SUV. No alluring curves or plunging rooflines like on the Nissan Juke or even Mazda CX-5. If you squint, you can see the slightest hint of Range Rover Evoque, but certainly not to the same extent of high fashion. In what looks to be a heavily Photoshopped front image, there are LED accent and auxiliary lighting, and what are either roof-mounted lights or roof rails. The most noteworthy concept-exclusive feature (that probably will not make it to production) are the bladelike rearview mirrors, likely housing closed-circuit rearview cameras.
Whether the iV-4 could have been the game-changer for Suzuki to reverse its flagging fortunes in the U.S. remains to be seen, but sad to say, that issue is already moot.
