BMW Begins Production of the 2014 X5

The Third-Generation X5 Is Still Made Exclusively in South Carolina

BMW began production of the third-generation X5 on August 1. The process began with dealer vehicles, which are designed to create excitement (and sales) in each respective region that they will go to. The first one built? A Mineral White M50d—it’s powered by an inline-six turbodiesel that uses M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. The interior of that X5 is draped in Exclusive Nappa Mocha leather. That X5 is going to be sent to a dealer in Eastern Europe.
More than 1.3 million X5 SUVs have been built, all of which were assembled exclusively at BMW’s South Carolina plant. From there, the X5s are exported to more than 140 markets worldwide. Explains BMW Manufacturing President Josef Kerscher, “Since 1999, the X5 has been a significant contributor to the Spartanburg plant’s global success. Our team will continue to build the next-generation X5 with the superior quality that our customers around the world have come to expect from South Carolina.”
The last second-gen X5 that was built in Spartanburg left the line on Friday, June 28. It was a Titanium Silver Metallic xDrive50i powered by a 4.4-liter, 400-hp V-8. It had Sand Beige Perforated Nevada Leather and the M Sport Package. It will become part of BMW’s permanent historic-car collection. This generation X5 was the best-selling model series in the history of the plant: Between September 2006 and June 2013, the plant in Spartanburg produced 728,107 of them.
