How Would a Top Ford Engineer use F-150 SVT Raptor Aux Switches?
Jamal Hameedi was recently appointed Ford's Global Vehicle Performance Chief Engineer, and is responsible for all of FoMoCo's high-performance street cars and trucks. He was on the team that built the Ford GT, and was the man in charge of such recent SVT successes as the Raptor, the 662-horsepower GT500, and the Focus ST.
We had the chance to ask him about a favorite feature created by one of his teams.
MT: Let's go back to your first big project as an SVT chief -- the Ford Raptor. One of the coolest unsung features we love about it is the four built-in auxiliary switches. What features would you assign those switches on your personal Raptor?
JH: Well, let's see. The first one would definitely be lights. No, make that the first two, as I'd want them split for separate options.
MT: For a high-mounted light bar? Maybe an LED windshield strip?
JH: No, my lights would definitely be upfront and low mounted, to project under the dust cloud. I'd have one switch for pencil-beam spotlights. The second switch would be for dispersion.
MT: And the third switch?
JH: Air compressor.
MT: Would you do a fancy onboard deflation/inflation system, like on a Hummer H1?
2013 Ford F 150 SVT Raptor climbing rocks 300x199 imageJH: Oh no. Ask any H1 owner about the reliability of those systems. It's really difficult to make something like that robust enough for off-roading.
MT: Got it. And the fourth switch? A winch?
JH: No. Exhaust bypass.
MT: Making it louder or quieter?
JA: Oh louder, of course.
Clearly, Ford's performance future is in good hands.
