NHTSA Awards Five-Star Rating to 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 crew-cab models a five-star overall safety rating, besting the 2014 Ford F-150 and 2014 Ram 1500's four-star ratings.
A five-star overall safety rating means that the 2014 Silverado and Sierra (crew cab models only) earned five stars in the front and side crash tests, and four stars in the rollover test. The GM trucks have not only received higher scores than competitors including the 2013 Tundra, but it's also an improvement compared to the last-gen models. They scored four stars overall. Although the new trucks haven't been tested yet by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, we higher scores there, too. Last year, the pickups received a "good" rating in the moderate overlap front test, "acceptable" in the side impact test, and "marginal" in the roof strength test.
The new Silverado and its Sierra twin are available with three engines: a 4.3-liter V-6 (285 hp, 305 lb-ft of torque), a 5.3-liter (355 hp, 385 lb-ft), and a 6.2-liter (420 hp, 450 lb-ft) V-8. All engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The pickups are also available with a full array of advanced safety features such as OnStar, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and Safety Seat Alert. Other available features include a rear-view camera and trailer-sway control feature. Standard equipment on the pickups include six airbags, front seat belt pretensions, and four-channel ABS brakes.
GM expects crew cab models to account for 60 percent of Silverado and Sierra sales, and says the trucks are the first pickups to earn the five-star overall rating since the NHTSA changed its New Car Assessment program in 2011.
