2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 6.2 V-8 Make 420 hp, 460 Lb-Ft Torque

GM Officially Takes "Most Powerful Half-Ton" Title

Edward A. SanchezSep 10, 2013
With the disclosure of power figures on the 4.3-liter V-6 and 5.3-liter V-8 versions of General Motors' new EcoTec3 family, there was only one engine for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra that we didn't have specs for, the mighty 6.2-liter V-8. Since its introduction in the Sierra Denali for 2007, the 6.2-liter has been the standard bearer in GM's half-ton line for the most power and torque. Not only does it reprise its role within GM's lineup for 2014, but can also take the crown as being the most powerful half-ton truck available, with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Those numbers represent an increase of 17 hp and 43 lb-ft of torque over last year's port-injected 6.2 Vortec V-8, but more important, outpower Ford's largest and most powerful offering in the F-150, the 6.2-liter SOHC V-8, which produces 411 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque. And as important as parking-lot bragging rights, trucks are all about capability, and here, too, the 6.2 gives GM an edge in maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds, 700 pounds higher than the F-150's highest rating.
But with an all-new F-150 barely a year away, expect Ford to have a few tricks up its own sleeve for the 2015 F-150. Even with the increased emphasis on economy and weight reduction, trucks are still about capability and capacity at their core, and expect that to remain a primary focus with all the full-size models.
