Fiat Taking Over GM's Half of VM Motori Diesel Joint Venture
Fiat To Be Full Owner of Light Duty Diesel Engine Manufacturer
We've driven and experienced the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and now the 2014 Ram 1500, and we're a fan of its smooth, torquey, refined performance. The state-of-the-art diesel mill is manufactured by VM Motori in Cento, Italy, just north of Bologna and, until now, was a 50/50 joint venture between Fiat and General Motors. According to a Reuters report, Fiat will soon take full control of VM Motori.
Such a possibility has existed for quite a while in initial joint venture paperwork first signed by Fiat in 2010. The latest development appears that it was in fact initiated by GM. A statement released by Fiat explains: "GM's notification to exercise its put option to sell to Fiat its 50 percent interest in VM Motori SpA is in line with the contracts Fiat entered into when it acquired a 50-percent stake in VM in 2010."
In addition to the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 in the Grand Cherokee and 2014 Ram 1500, VM Motori also manufactured the 2.8-liter I-4 diesel briefly offered in the Jeep Liberty in the U.S. and an updated version of which is still offered in the overseas versions of the Jeep Wrangler.
