2014 Kia Sorento Improves NHTSA Safety Test Ratings
The Kia Sorento midsize crossover got more than just a face-lift for the 2014 model year -- the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the 2014 Sorento an overall five-star rating, up from the 2013 model's four-star overall rating.
With all NHTSA safety tests rated out of five stars, the front- and all-wheel-drive 2014 Kia Sorento got five stars in the overall, frontal crash, and side crash, categories, with a four-star performance in the rollover test. The pre-refresh 2013 Sorento was rated four stars in the overall, frontal crash, and rollover categories, with a five-star rating in the side crash test. The 2014 Kia Sorento is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.
Aside from the refreshed body, the 2014 Kia Sorento also offers a more powerful V-6 (an I-4 is standard), revised suspension tuning, and an SX Limited trim level that includes a FlexSteer selectable steering system, HID headlights, 19-inch chrome wheels, and Nappa leather seat trim.
We weren't impressed with the pre-refresh Kia Sorento, but in a First Test of a 2014 Sorento SX V-6 as well as a review of a 2014 Sorento EX, the crossover performed a bit better. Through the first eight months of 2013, Kia Sorento sales are off six percent, with 73,531 units sold making it the third-most-popular Kia, behind the Soul and Optima, in that order.
