Report: Cadillac Escalade Family Could Grow To Include Crossovers

Management Cites Equity of Escalade Name, Customer Input for "Different Experience"

Oct 9, 2013
Starting with the Cadillac CTS in 2003, the brand started moving toward alphabetical names for its vehicles from that point forward. Now, from ATS to CTS and XTS, Cadillac has gone almost completely alphanumeric in its naming strategy. The lone holdout from this convention has been the brand's large-and-in-charge SUV, the Escalade. Don't expect the Escalade name to be dropped completely anytime soon, though. In fact, some within GM would like to see the sub-brand expanded to include offerings beyond the traditional scope of the Escalade product lineup.
Cadillac Senior Global Vice President Bob Ferguson said, "There's a lot of equity in Escalade. I'd like to explore the notion of other vehicles that could carry that brand name," following the reveal of the 2015 Escalade, according to Automotive News.
Ferguson cited customer feedback from those who like a lot of the Escalade's style and capability attributes, but would like a slightly smaller and more fuel-efficient package. An obvious candidate to be included in the Escalade family would be a variation of GM's Lambda platform or its successor, currently sold as the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Chevrolet Traverse. The Lambda platform splits the difference in length between the standard-wheelbase Escalade and the Suburban-size ESV. Ferguson hedged his statements saying no official decisions have yet been made on the extension of the Escalade brand.
