Redesigned 2014 Mercedes-Benz ML Gets IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Designation
Changes to Door Sill Design Help in Frontal Offset Test
Manufacturers are working hard to earn the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety's coveted new Top Safety Pick+ designation. With almost all new cars earning a Good rating in the previous Top Safety Pick tests, the agency added another wrinkle with the addition of a frontal offset test that suddenly knocked a lot of previously high-scoring vehicles from achieving the new standard. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML SUV was one of those models that fell slightly short of the new gold standard. But a design change to the front doorsills on the 2014 models have allowed the 2014 Mercedes-Benz ML to get the TSP+ rating.
In its test observations, the IIHS noted the driver's space was "maintained reasonably well" in the impact, and that significant risks of injury to areas other than the driver's legs was minimal. This makes the ML the first Mercedes to earn the TSP+ rating. The only other midsize luxury SUV to earn the TSP+ rating to date is the Volvo XC60. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL full-size SUV has not yet been tested by IIHS. The 2014 ML got a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and got 5 stars in all categories except rollover, where it received a 4-star rating.
