Spied: 2015 BMW X6 Prototype Gets Wrung Out on the 'Ring
With the 2014 BMW X5 about to go on sale, it's time for the Bavarian brand to ready the fastback version of its SUV, the X6. Though U.S. sales of the X6 have slipped (just 375 units sold in September, compared to 612 units the same month last year), BMW apparently still sees a business case for a next-gen "Sport Activity Coupe," as these spy shots show.
The BMW X6 test mule, seen here running trials on the Nürburgring, wears a revised front end similar to that of the new X5. The signature dual kidney grilles appear larger, and the headlights are wider with squared-off LED accent rings. The housings will also likely meet the grilles in the center, a trend started by the F30 3 Series. The X6′s profile is unmistakable, with a sloping roofline that curves upward at the rear for a slight ducktail spoiler. The taillights will most likely get three-dimensional LED accents within the housing to match the X5.
For drivetrain options, expect the turbocharged 300-hp 3.0-liter I-5 to return as the base engine, with the improved 445-hp, 480-lb-ft twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 serving in the xDrive50i. All-wheel drive will likely be standard on most models, but BMW may also offer a rear-drive sDrive model as it does for the X5. The twin-turbodiesel 3.0-liter I-6 may also be an option, offering 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. For those who like the X6′s look but not its $60,000+ price tag, BMW is also preparing an X3-based version called the X4.
