October 2013 Truck Sales - Ford F-Series Still Rules, Ram Approaches 30,000
Strong Month for Silverado, Sierra, Tundra
Full-size truck sales continue to keep up a brisk clip, with all four of the domestic models showing double-digit year-over-year October gains and Ram showing the largest percentage gain at 18 percent. As usual, the Ford F-Series is on top by a commanding margin.
Among the mid-sizers, the Tacoma takes its usual place at the top of the pile, but ekes out a modest 1.3-percent gain over last October. In terms of unit sales, the Nissan Frontier sold less than half of the Tacoma's overall volume, but showed a strong 71.8-percent gain over last year. Farther down the list, the Honda Ridgeline racks up a 24.4-percent gain, on a modest 1239 units. The discontinued Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon continue their wind-down in anticipation of the 2015 models coming out next year.
Ford F-Series -- 63,803, Up 12.9 Percent
The top four best-selling trucks are a fairly predictable list, but even more predictable is the F-Series first-place ranking, a position it has enjoyed consecutively for the better part of three decades. October was no exception, with a solid 12.9-percent gain. With an all-new F-150 and updated 2015 Super Duty coming soon, its advantage may widen even further.
Chevrolet Silverado -- 42,660, Up 10.1 Percent
As dealers are fully stocked with the 2014 model, the Silverado is selling at a respectable pace, but still can't match Ford for growth or volume. The new Silverado delivers impressive fuel economy and refinement, and hits the sweet spot of what many full-size truck buyers are seeking.
Ram 1500/2500/3500 -- 29,846, Up 18 Percent
Ram continues to surprise with its consistently strong sales performance, and constantly improving products year by year. The 2014 model year is no exception, with major changes to both the HD models, and the addition of a light-duty diesel to the Ram 1500. Expect Ram sales to continue to show gains in the months ahead.
GMC Sierra -- 16,503, Up 13.3 Percent
The Sierra may not sell in the same volumes as the Silverado, but GMC has a dedicated and loyal customer base and following, and does particularly well in coastal markets. The Sierra showed a respectable 13.3-percent gain for October.
Toyota Tacoma -- 12,351, Up 1.3 Percent
The Tacoma still rules the midsize truck roost, but things could change soon with the introduction of the new GM midsize models. October growth was a modest 1.3 percent, but it still outsells its closest rival by a more than two-to-one margin.
Toyota Tundra -- 9913, Up 22.6 Percent
The Tundra may not sell in the same volumes as the domestic full-size models, but it sold more than 10 times as many units as its Japanese rival Nissan Titan, which failed to break 1000 units for October.
Nissan Frontier -- 5242, Up 71.8 Percent
The Frontier may not stack up to the Tacoma in unit volume, but it had a strong 71.8-percent gain for October. The addition of more technology and convenience items have made it more competitive with the Tacoma.
Honda Ridgeline -- 1239, Up 24.4 Percent
The Ridgeline continues to serve a small but enthusiastic niche of customers. The Ridgeline will take a temporary hiatus after the 2014 model year, with a new model expected in 2016.
Nissan Titan -- 984, Down 37.8 Percent
Nissan dealers are likely eagerly awaiting the all-new 2015 model with the optional Cummins V-8 diesel, and finally the availability of a value-minded V-6 model and regular cab. The addition of these variations should increase the Titan's sales volume considerably.
Chevrolet Colorado -- 29, Down 98.2 Percent
The remaining inventory of the Chevrolet Colorado continues to sell down in anticipation of the all-new 2015 model. For the first time in nearly a decade, the Toyota Tacoma may face its first serious rival.
GMC Canyon -- 5, Down 98.9 Percent
The Canyon sold a grand total of five units for October, but keep in mind that this is for a model that has been out of production for nearly two years. An all-new model accompanying the Colorado is due later in 2014.
