2014 Volvo XC90 Earns Top Safety Pick+ Status (W/Video)
The Volvo XC90 may have been the 2003 Motor Trend SUV of the Year, but that doesn't mean it's out of tricks just yet. The 2014 Volvo XC90 has just been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, perhaps giving buyers another reason to consider the old crossover before the new one arrives at the end of the 2014 calendar year.
To get a Top Safety Pick+ award, the XC90 earned a score of good in every crash safety test including the new, more difficult small overlap front test. While plenty of luxury SUVs are Top Safety Picks, the 2014 XC90 joins the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Volvo XC60 as premium-nameplate crossovers with the TSP+ award.
In the small overlap front test, the 2014 Volvo XC90 scored well, with the IIHS noting the dummy had a low risk of any significant injuries for a crash of this severity. The Volvo hasn't been safety-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration except for the rollover category, in which it scored four stars out of a possible five.
Volvo XC90 sales through the first 10 months of the year are down 28.0 percent, to 5653 units. For comparison, that's more during the same period than the XC70 (4047 units), S80, and now-discontinued C30 and C70 but far less than the XC60 (16,685 units) and S60 (20,008 units).
