2003-2012 Ram HD Trucks Recalled for Tie Rod Assemblies
Misaligned Tie Rods Could Cause Steering Loss
Chrysler is recalling 1.2 million HD trucks from 2003-2012 model years. More than half, as many as 726,000, may not need repair in association with the recall, but are being recalled out of caution. The first campaign will involve an inspection of 842,400 2003-2008 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks to identify approximately 116,000 repaired with misaligned tie-rod assemblies. Two other campaigns involve 294,000 2008-2012 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, 2008 Ram 1500 Mega Cab models, and 43,500 Ram 4500 and 5500 4x4 chassis cabs.
Six accidents and two injuries have been officially reported involving 2008-2012 2500 and 3500 trucks and one additional accident involving the other models subject to the recall. Owners will be notified in December by mail if their vehicle is affected, and repairs could start as soon as January. Owners of 4500- and 5500-series models should bring their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for inspection and realignment, as replacement parts for those models may not be available until later in 2014.
Of the vehicles recalled, 968,000 are in the U.S., 157,000 are in Canada, 37,100 are in Mexico, and 18,000 are located outside of the NAFTA region. Owners seeking more information about the recall are encouraged to call 800-853-1403.
