Confirmed: 2015 Ram ProMaster City Compact Cargo Van Coming
Fiat Doblo-Based Hauler Prepares to Take On Transit Connect, NV200
In what's been suspected for a while, Ram is about to add a third line to portfolio of models, in addition to the pickups and the Fiat Ducato-based ProMaster full-size cargo van. This time, it's a smaller hauler, wearing the name of ProMaster City, and based on the popular and capable Fiat Doblo cargo van sold in Europe. The Doblo (pictured below) is offered in many different configurations in the European market, and it's unknown how many of those variations will be offered on the 2015 ProMaster City.
Doing a little homework, we dug up some specs on the Doblo, and discovered a potentially formidable competitor to both the Ford Transit Connect as well as the Nissan NV200. In its longest, tallest configuration, the Fiat Doblo cargo van has a maximum cargo capacity of 176.6 cubic feet, which would put it well ahead of both the NV200, which maxes out at 122.7 cubic feet, and the Ford Transit Connect, which offers 129.6 cubic feet. Even the long-wheelbase low-roof model could be class-leading with 148.3 cubic feet of cargo space.
Another unknown factor is what will be under the ProMaster City's hood. The European model is offered with both a naturally-aspirated and turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir gas I-4, and 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4s. Our money's on the 2.0-liter and possibly the 2.4-liter TigerShark I-4 gas engines, and possibly one diesel engine, giving the ProMaster City a class exclusive in the compact cargo van segment. Expect more details in the weeks and months ahead.
