New BMW X4, Refreshed X3 Will Lead SUV Overhaul in 2014
It's the year of the “Sports Activity Coupe" next year, as BMW is getting ready to introduce the all-new X4 crossover in addition to the next-generation X6.
While we've spied the X4 looking near production-ready a couple times before, the crossover will appear in the flesh at the 2014 New York auto show in April. From what we've already seen, the new X4, which we saw in concept form at the Shanghai auto show, looks like a baby X6 with its raked-back roofline. With its low-slung stance and large front air intakes, the X4 will appear more aggressive and sportier than the X3, which will also ring in the New Year with a revised front fascia similar to the X4's. Like the X3, the X4 will be built in South Carolina, and should be powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-four making around 240 hp, with an optional 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 cranking it up to 300 hp. Engines will be mated an eight-speed automatic, and a diesel engine is also possible, likely the 2.0-liter TwinPower turbodiesel I-4 found in the 328d.
An all-new X6 is also on the horizon, which will appear more muscular than the current crossover. Finally, the X5 M and X6 M are also reportedly due at the end of next year, when it will debut with increased power ratings from its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8.
