2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Gets Up to 20 City, 28 Highway MPG

The New Full-Size Mileage Champ, For Now

Feb 4, 2014
After much anticipation, EPA figures for the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel have finally been released. The official numbers are 20 city, 28 highway, 23 combined for the two-wheel-drive model, and 19 city, 27 highway and 22 combined for the four-wheel-drive model. These figures make it the most fuel-efficient half-ton truck on the market for the 2014 model year.
Our own scientific Real MPG testing yielded city economy between 18 and 20 mpg, and highway economy figures from 26 to 28 mpg, so these final figures are not a huge surprise to us. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has won numerous industry awards and accolades, along with our own 2014 Truck of the Year award, which the new diesel engine was pivotal in helping to make the Ram 1500 the first back-to-back Truck of the Year winner in the history of the competition.
However, the Ram EcoDiesel could get some competition with the 2015 Ford F-150 EcoBoost with the new 2.7-liter V-6. Official weight figures have not been released, but Ford is claiming weight savings of up to 700 lb for a typical configuration. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine also has auto start-stop. Unlike the Ram, the 2015 F-150 will initially be offered only with a six-speed automatic, although nine or even 10-speed transmissions could be in its future.
