Audi Q8 e-Tron Has Tesla Model X In Its Sights
Audi Aiming for Long Range With Ultra-Luxe Electric Crossover
While other automakers have struggled finding large-scale customer acceptance of their electric vehicles, Tesla continues to set sales records each month with the Model S sedan, despite its premium pricing. The sleek electric sedan is soon to be joined by the Model X crossover, giving customers a more practical option for families. But the California-based automaker may not be alone for long with a premium electric crossover. Autocar is reporting that Audi is planning a fully electric e-tron version of its upcoming ultra-premium Q8 crossover, possibly for the 2017 model year.
Unlike most of the other full electrics currently on the market, which have sub-100-mile ranges, Audi is reportedly targeting an ambitious range of over 300 miles for the electric Q8. This surpasses even the estimated 200-plus-mile range of the Model X. Although Europe has historically favored diesels, electric models are starting to gain favor as more urban centers on the continent implement CO2 and congestion charges on vehicles driving in downtown areas. In addition to the electric model, the Q8 is expected to offer conventional gasoline and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid.
The Q8 will reportedly be a sleeker, more luxurious, more street-oriented version of the Q7, and could possibly serve as the basis of the upcoming Bentley SUV.
