Ford To Offer SmartLink Retrofit Module For Older Models
Accessory Available Through Dealers, Offers Expanded Telematics Features
Since the mid-2000s, Ford Motor Company has been at the vanguard of in-vehicle telematics, starting with the first-generation Sync system and continuing with today’s sophisticated Sync 3. The only downside to this rapid technological progress is that buyers who bought their vehicles a few years ago feel left out. Ford is giving owners of 2010-2016 vehicles an opportunity to enjoy more advanced telematics features with the addition of its new Ford SmartLink module.
The module plugs in to the vehicle’s OBD-II port and enables vehicle starting, locking and unlocking through a smartphone app, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot capability for up to eight devices, vehicle health and security alerts, and vehicle location assistance. The module is a collaborative effort between Ford, Verizon Telematics, and Delphi Automotive. It will be available starting this summer at Ford and Lincoln dealers nationwide. Pricing for the SmartLink module will be released closer to the on-sale date.
