2018 Volkswagen Atlas Weekend Built for Active Families

Name Harkens Back to Microbus, Vanagon Package

Feb 8, 2017
Despite the TDI diesel emissions crisis, Volkswagen finished 2016 as the largest automaker globally by sales volume, largely on its success in China and other emerging markets. However, the brand has struggled to reach mainstream status in the U.S., mainly due to its misfit product lineup relative to American carbuyers’ tastes. VW is hoping to change that with the introduction of the three-row Atlas crossover, a configuration aimed squarely at the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and other juggernauts in the segment. To further enhance its appeal to active young families, VW is introducing the Atlas Weekend Edition concept at the Chicago Auto Show. The Weekend Edition starts with a SEL Premium trim with the 3.6L VR6 and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
The name recalls the “Weekender” packages offered on the Microbus and Vanagon models of the past. The content of the Weekend Edition consists of an “Urban Loader” roof cargo box, offering up to 17.7 cubic feet of additional storage when in use and a sleek, low-profile appearance when collapsed. The modular roof rack system is designed to accommodate attachment accessories for skis, snowboards, kayaks, and bikes. Integrated side steps also aid access to the roof.
On the inside, the Weekend Edition features a pet-friendly barrier behind the second row allowing pets to ride in comfort and a universal tablet mount behind the front seats to accommodate most tablets on the market for portable rear-seat entertainment. Additional accessories include window and hood deflectors, a heavy-duty cargo area liner, and all-weather floormats. Many of the accessories featured on the concept will be available at Volkswagen dealers when the Atlas goes on sale in spring 2017.
