Nissan to Show Cummins-Powered NV Cargo X 4x4 Concept in Chicago
Diesel-Powered Van Built for the Boonies
Ever since the rumors of Cummins power in the Nissan Titan XD, the armchair quarterbacks in the enthusiast community have been talking about dropping the 5.0L Cummins V-8 into Nissan’s loaf-shaped workhorse, the fullsize NV van. There are reportedly a few prototypes running around Columbus, Indiana, and Nashville, Tennessee. However, they haven’t been in the public eye to any great extent. Well, a real-life Cummins-powered Nissan NV is about to make its debut at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show. Built in partnership with “Xtreme Off-Road” television host Ian Johnson, Nissan not only added diesel power under the hood of the NV Cargo X but added four-wheel drive and 37-inch tires to make this van ready to hit the trail at a moment’s notice.
As in the Titan XD, the Cummins is backed by a heavy-duty Aisin six-speed automatic. To accommodate the added weight of the Cummins, as well as the transfer case and front axle, a completely custom front suspension design was fabricated. The rear suspension retains leaf springs to maintain the NV’s substantial cargo capacity. Further adding to the van’s off-road bona fides are 37-inch tires, a 10,000-pound front winch, and a custom tube bumper and front skidplate. The interior of the van sports an onboard air system, fluid containment and storage, a fullsize spare tire, recovery rope, recovery tracks, a high-lift jack, portable welder, and a tool bag. The van was taken to Arizona’s Pyeatt Draw trail to test its trail-worthiness, which you can see in the video below. You can see the NV Cargo X at the Chicago Auto show, with Johnson signing autographs on Saturday, February 11, from noon to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.

The Nissan NV Cargo X project vehicle stands over seven-and-a-half feet tall on 37-inch tires and is powered by a Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel transplanted from a Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup.
