Land Rover Reborn Program Hits 1977 Range Rover

Feb 2, 2017
Land Rover Classic will extend its historic Reborn program to a 1977 Range Rover three-door, destined for Salón Retromobile 2017 in Paris next week.

The 1977 Range Rover is one of the nameplate’s oldest models, making it an ideal platform to showcase what Land Rover Reborn is capable of. This particular example is painted Bahama Gold, and it gets its power from a 3.5L V-8 that makes 132 hp and 186 lb-ft. Per classic Range Rover tradition, a four-speed manual gearbox sends power to a full-time all-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential and low-range transfer case. Perfectly restored to contemporary specifications, this Range Rover features cloth seats and unadorned interior trim, surprisingly, as leather and wood trim weren’t available until the 1980s.

The choice of an early three-door Range Rover as the recipient of this comprehensive restoration is due to that model’s rarity and desirability. As the first luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, the early Range Rover Classic is a good foil to the Reborn program’s other offering, the Series I. The company will produce an initial batch of 10 Range Rovers through the Reborn program, each at a cost of £135,000, or nearly $170,000. That’s quite a princely sum when one could restore an example for far less, but the Reborn Range Rover is assembled with a level of originality and sympathy to history that would be impossible to replicate anywhere but in Land Rover’s own workshops.
