2018 Ford Edge SEL Gets New Sport Appearance Package
Option Brings Aggressive Styling to Midlevel Trim
The Ford Edge will get another variant for 2018 with the SEL Sport Appearance Package, revealed at the Dallas Fort Worth Auto Show. Building from the two-row crossover’s SEL midlevel trim, the Sport Appearance Package adds special styling and interior fitments, offering much of the look of the Edge Sport without the $40,000 price tag. It echoes similar option packages for the Explorer XLT and Escape.
The Edge SEL Sport Appearance Package includes a long list of Magnetic Metallic–painted exterior upgrades, including 10-spoke 19-inch wheels, a special grille surround, mirror caps, a rear spoiler, and front and rear skidplates, as well as blacked-out headlamp bezels and window trim. Inside, customers get unique Mayan Grey cloth seats with Umber sueded accents, as well as pale gold textured appliques for the dashboard and black floormats with “Edge” embroidery in Umber.
In addition to the styling changes, the SEL Sport Appearance Package also includes premium audio, a rearview camera with reverse sensors, and the SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional extras include a panoramic sunroof, navigation, blind-spot monitoring, and a hands-free power liftgate.
Ford says the decision to offer the Sport Appearance Package exclusively with a fabric-lined interior was deliberate, giving customers in hot climates the ability to choose technology and infotainment options without having to sacrifice heat-friendly cloth seating. Currently, features like the panoramic sunroof, SYNC 3, and navigation are only available on the Edge when paired with packages or trim levels that include mandatory leather seating.
That news will be a welcome respite to customers in Texas, Arizona, and California, where hot leather seats sometimes resemble frying pans for their ability to scorch exposed flesh. In fact, Ford revealed the Edge SEL Sport Appearance Package in Dallas on purpose, since that market orders cloth seating at a rate of about five percent greater than the national average of Ford Edge sales.
Available with the standard 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 or optional 3.5L V-6, the 2018 Edge SEL Sport Appearance Package arrives this fall. Ford will ask $1,295 for the package on top of the SEL trim level, so customers should plan on bringing at least $34,000 to the dealership.
