Star Designer Kim Lewis Builds Company Around 1977 Ford F-150
“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Production Chief Runs Around in a Vintage Ranger
Confession time: Your author is a rabid consumer of DIY/real estate television. One of the most amusing parts is how each time a work truck is shown, it’s usually with some black tape stuck over the logos to prevent the TV program from running afoul with product placement executives and vehicle manufacturers.
But if Kim Lewis, a six-year veteran of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, were to show up to a jobsite in her 1977 Ford F-150 Ranger, it’d take more than a few black stickers to hide its identity. That’s because “Pearl,” as the Ranger is affectionately known, is one of the most instantly recognizable aspects of Kim Lewis Designs. The firm, which specializes in residential, commercial, and tiny home design, is based in Austin, Texas, and Lewis uses her blue and white Ford for deliveries and consultations as frequently as possible.
Lewis and the Ford Motor Company have collaborated in the past before, most recently on a Thanksgiving Day makeover of Dallas Fire Station No. 43. Lewis comes from a long line of Ford enthusiasts, and she says she learned to drive in her grandfather’s 1978 F-150. Her F-150 Ranger is one of the better-equipped models of its day, evidenced by its lovely two-tone paint and color-matched wheels.
