Video: Bollinger Motors EV Truck Will Have Portal Axles!

Truck Described as “Simple, Basic, Tough”

Mar 9, 2017
A few weeks ago, we saw the teaser for the forthcoming electric sport-utility truck from Bollinger Motors. In this video, the development team and Bollinger Motors founder and CEO Robert Bollinger discuss some of the thinking and approach to developing and building the new EV truck concept. The video starts out with Bollinger sharing the frustrations he had from a severe winter storm several years ago, resulting in his fullsize Chevy truck getting stuck multiple times. That’s when he had the epiphany for “unmatched ground clearance.”
The team went on to say the choice to go electric was the belief that that’s eventually where transportation will be. However, the decision was driven by more than utopian idealism. Some of the potential advantages cited are the quiet operation that could come in handy while hunting, as well as the potential of using the vehicle itself as a power source for an off-grid cabin or plugging in power tools, an idea we alluded to in our Tesla Model U concept.
Another intriguing glimpse into the packaging and design of the truck is one of the developers saying “you could put a 20-foot piece of lumber up the middle of the truck” suggesting a pass-through between the bed and cab like the late Chevy Avalanche. Of even greater interest to us was the discovery of another video on the company’s YouTube channel showing the assembly of a portal axle hub and front knuckle. The components look appropriately beefy, and the eight wheel lugs show that this is going to be one substantial machine. Consider our interest piqued.
