Well before his work on synthetic lubricants, Al had an entrepreneurial spirit. As a child, he sold magazines and newspapers, collected scrap metal, and came up with other money-making ideas to help support his family in tough times. According to Amsoil, Al served in the Merchant Marines, the Air Force, and the Duluth unit of the Air National Guard, twice recognized as the nation’s top airman. His 25 years of service as a fighter pilot and squadron commander motivated him with the knowledge of synthetic lubricants.
Inspired by the use of synthetic oil in high-stress jet engines, Al began research and development of automotive synthetic lubricants in 1963, with his first product coming about in 1966. In 1972, the Amsoil-branded synthetic motor oil became the first such product to meet the service requirements of the American Petroleum Institute.
A memorial service for Al will be held at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center Auditorium Saturday, April 15, beginning at 12 p.m. with a service at 1 p.m. His family has requested donations to Al’s favorite charities in lieu of flowers: Animal Allies of Duluth, the Douglas County Humane Society, and the Amsoil Northland Law Enforcement K-9 Foundation.
The Truck Trend Network extends its sincere condolences to Al’s family and to the entire Amsoil team.
