Bollinger Shares Video of Development of Utility Chassis, Powertrain

Goal is “Ready for Production, Not Just Proof of Concept”

Apr 21, 2017
We’ve followed the developments of upstate New York startup Bollinger Motors over the past year. Our initial skepticism has since changed to curiosity and now a “rooting for the underdog” optimism that the startup can bring the vehicle to production. Unlike many EV concepts that try to wow consumers with futuristic touchscreens and exotic ambient lighting, the Bollinger is refreshingly basic. Aside from the high-tech drivetrain, the rest of the vehicle is very straightforward, with a boxed aluminum chassis, 8-lug wheels, and portal axle wheel hubs. Bollinger says the vehicle is designed to be serviceable by the owner by using as many off-the-shelf parts as possible. We respect and appreciate this no-nonsense approach. The Bollinger team shares more details about the development of the truck in this latest YouTube video.

Founder Robert Bollinger says the goal is to be done with the prototype in 15 weeks, which would put the deadline at approximately mid-late July. The goal is not to just produce a concept that could be ogled and stared at, but a fully functional, production-intent prototype, according to electrical engineer Luc Pham. The engineer in charge of the gearbox is “CJ” Winegar, so we’re already inclined to root for the Bollinger Team. We recently visited the company’s upstate New York campus in person for up-close look at the prototype. While much of the information gained during the visit is under embargo at the moment, we were impressed by what we saw and believe this has the makings of being a unique, capable entry in the off-road utility segment.
