Ford to Start Selling Ranger in China in 2018

Popular Global Midsize Joins Raptor

Apr 7, 2017
It appears that the automotive gold rush into China is not over yet. Ford announced that it will begin selling the Ranger midsize pickup in China starting in 2018, joining the F-150 Raptor in the world’s largest car market. Although China is not typically thought of as a “truck” country, it is already the fourth-largest pickup market in the world and saw 14 percent growth last year.
Unlike Chevrolet, which has announced the limited availability of its U.S.-built Silverado and Colorado pickups, it appears the Ranger model initially sold in China will be the global version, likely sourced from Ford’s plant in Rayong, Thailand. Both General Motors and Ford see potential in this market segment. The Toyota Hilux, the best-selling pickup globally, is not officially sold in China and not listed on the company’s Chinese consumer website. The best-selling pickup in China is currently the Great Wall Wingle/Steed. Great Wall is reportedly looking at entering Western markets with a factory potentially in Mexico or the U.S.
Chinese consumers have long seen pickups as crude, utilitarian, and uncomfortable. However, exposure to Western media and entertainment has changed consumer attitudes toward pickups. An additional factor is several municipalities in China easing their restrictions on pickups in urban centers. China has been taking aggressive action to curb its notorious pollution, and pickups have traditionally been seen as a culprit due to their higher fuel consumption.
