Mercedes-Benz Gives Up on Certifying 2017 Diesel Models, For Now

Company Reportedly Undecided on Future of Diesels in U.S.

May 10, 2017
Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler AG has reportedly dropped its bid to sell 2017 model year diesels in the U.S. market for the time being, according to Reuters. Since the Volkswagen TDI emissions cheating scandal of 2015, regulatory scrutiny for diesel cars and trucks has increased significantly, including on-road testing to see if emissions results in the lab can be replicated in real-world driving. Mercedes-Benz offered four diesel models in the U.S. for the 2016 model year, including the E250 Bluetec, GL350 Bluetec, GLE350d, and Sprinter cargo van. The Sprinter, classified as a commercial vehicle, is the only current 2017 model Mercedes-Benz certified for sale in the U.S. Daimler is currently under investigation by regulators in the U.S. and Germany for potential emissions cheating.
Although it has dropped its request certification for 2017 models for the time being, the company could still seek certification at a later date. Volkswagen only recently received approval to sell unsold new 2015 model TDIs that had received the approved software fix to bring them into compliance with regulations. Other companies and brands under investigation by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the U.S. Environmental protection agency include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. Sales of 2017 models of those vehicles are currently on hold.
