Ram Issues Major Recall on Trucks for Airbag Software
Two Accidents, One Death Reported Possibly Related to Issue
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is issuing a major recall affecting 2013-2016 Ram 1500 and 2500 and 2014-2016 Ram 3500 trucks. At issue is an error code in the safety system software which may prevent the side air bag and seatbelt pretensioners from deploying in the event of a rollover. The error code can be triggered by a significant underbody impact, which can cause the module to incorrectly conclude that a sensor has failed and trigger a warning light in the instrument cluster. The safety system can be reset by cycling the ignition from “off” then to “on/run.” If the warning light turns off, the system has reset.
The company is aware of one fatality, two injuries, and two accidents potentially related to this issue. As part of the recall, FCA will update the safety system software. The recall affects approximately 1 million trucks in the U.S., 216,007 trucks in Canada, 21,668 in Mexico, and 21,530 trucks outside of the NAFTA region. Affected owners will be notified by mail. The recall campaign is scheduled to start late June. In the meantime, if you want to check to see if your truck is affected, you can call FCA Customer Care at (800) 853-1403 or visit mopar.com, select the “My Vehicle” option, and click on “Recalls” to enter your 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN).
