In the video, Jovine’s immediate excitement was palpable as he raced to the enormous (80’x14’x18’) toy truck box that housed the new Volvo VNL model. Magnus Koeck, vice president of marketing and brand management for Volvo Trucks North America, described Jovine’s reactions as “a great feeling to know both young and old have such affinity for Volvo Trucks and our values.” After unboxing the truck, Jovine was able to explore its interior and take a ride with a professional driver.
According to Guinness World Records, in order to break the record, the box needed to completely encapsulate the Volvo VNL, and had to be opened by hand without use of any tools. The Volvo VNL also had to be removed from the box without any damage to the box itself, which had to be constructed of normal “box” materials like cardboard and cellophane.

Volvo’s new VNL series meets the needs of long-haul and professional drivers by introducing groundbreaking technology and innovations efficiency, productivity, safety and, uptime. It’s new features range from new exterior design to improvements in efficiency and driver safety in the way of an all-new dashboard, 5-inch color driver customizable information display, and a smart steering wheel, which puts nearly all the driver interface controls right at a driver’s fingertips.
The VNL series comes standard with the 13-liter Volvo D13 engine, while Daycab and VNL 400 models can spec the 11-liter Volvo D11 as an option. The 15-liter Cummins X15 is also available in the VNL series.
Both the Volvo D11 and D13 engines feature Volvo’s patented wave pistons, a unique design that helps burn fuel more efficiently.
The Volvo VNL is also available with the Volvo D13 Turbo Compound (D13 TC) engine that utilizes a mechanical waste heat recovery system to capture wasted energy from the engine’s exhaust. The result is an additional 50 horsepower fed back to the crankshaft and an improvement in fuel efficiency of up to 6.5 percent.
“Launching the new Volvo VNL series is an historic moment for Volvo Trucks North America, and we greatly enjoyed pursuing a Guinness World Records title with Joel to help commemorate this moment,” said Koeck in response to the reveal of the VNL Series.
