2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Alleged Options List Leaked – Diesel, Gas, and Hybrid?
Available Full-Time 4x4 and No More Two-Door Sahara

The subject-matter experts at JL Wrangler Forums seem to have found the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL’s alleged options list, sourced from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles dealer system. A few key takeaways include a simplified trim level schematic, with base Sport and top-spec Rubicon trims for the two-door; the four-door Wrangler Unlimited also offers a midlevel Sahara model.
Of technical interest is a reputed mild-hybrid powertrain mated to the available turbocharged I-4. JL Wrangler Forums cites engine option code EC3: “2.0 I4 DOHC DI Turbo Engine w/ BSG,” which suggests the engine will be available with a belt-starter generator. The belt-starter generator is hitched to the engine’s crankshaft by the serpentine belt, mounted in the location that might otherwise be used for an alternator. Using a relatively high-voltage electrical system, the BSG can apply positive power to the crankshaft in either low-speed, electric-only operation or blended engine/electric-boost operation. A BSG takes the place of both a starter and an alternator, enabling engine idle stop and regenerative braking for improved efficiency.
The engine list also features a 3.0L turbodiesel V-6 engine, likely related to the EcoDiesel found in the recently recertified 2017 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Plan on at least 250 hp and 400 lb-ft for the JL Wrangler’s oil-burning engine. Both the EcoDiesel and the base 3.6L Pentastar V-6 will be available with engine start-stop. All three engines will get an eight-speed automatic, while the Pentastar also offers a six-speed manual gearbox standard.
Another mechanical tidbit found in the dealer order sheet is the availability of the Selec-Trac transfer case on the Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. If it follows the trend set by Jeep’s previous Selec-Trac systems, it’ll offer an automatic four-wheel-drive mode in addition to two-wheel and four-wheel high and four-wheel low. This feature will likely add to the vehicle’s appeal with “lifestyle” buyers, those who rarely need hardcore off-roading capability but would still like some added traction in inclement weather and on rough roads. It’s a natural fit for the Sahara, which will likely continue to offer the Wrangler’s sole 18-inch wheel option (Tech Gray Polished Face wheels, according to the order sheet).
So far, the dealer order sheet features four different top options: a power-operated soft top, a conventional soft top, a Sunrider soft top, and a three-piece hardtop (in body color or black). However, last month’s dealer meeting suggested an optional power sliding hardtop, so we’re inclined to think this options list is incomplete. Also missing are the Wrangler’s inevitable special editions: Hard Rock, Recon, Willys Wheeler, etc. Expect to see those start to pop up once the Wrangler JL gets closer to dealers.
Available tire options will include 255/70R18 all-terrain tires, 255/75R17 all-terrain or all-season tires, and LT285/70R17 OWL all-terrain tires. For those of you keeping score at home, that means the Wrangler JL will be available with a maximum tire diameter of 32.75 inches, which is very darn respectable for a factory-fresh off-roader.
As-yet-confirmed colors for the Wrangler JL include Granite Crystal Metallic, Acid Yellow, Firecracker Red, Billet Silver Metallic, Bright White, Black, and—wait for it—Nacho. Expect that last one to be an orange-yellow option, possibly replacing Dozer Yellow. JL Wrangler Forums notes that light green and blue colors do not appear on the list in spite of being confirmed at the dealer meeting last month. Expect more hues to arrive at a later date, perhaps tied to those aforementioned special editions.
Upholstery will be black or Heritage Tan/black, rendered either in leather or cloth. The options list features an LED lighting package, dual tops, steel bumpers, air conditioning, an Alpine premium soundsystem, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a limited-slip rear differential, remote keyless entry with a proximity sensor, and a remote start system.
