Amid Volkswagen’s ongoing diesel debacle, the 2018 VW Atlas has earned Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick designation for 2017.

Volkswagen’s newest SUV had to earn good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests, which include small overlap front, moderate overlap front, front side, roof strength, and head restraints. The SUV’s optional front crash prevention system earned it a superior rating in the crash avoidance and mitigation category.
In the 12-mph track test, the Atlas successfully avoided the impending collision, while in the 25-mph test, the vehicle was capable of reducing impact speed by 8 mph.

While the vehicle passed the crash and crash avoidance tests with flying colors, Volkswagen misses out on the Top Safety Pick+ designation because of the Atlas’ headlights. According to the IIHS, the vehicle’s low beams offered fair visibility on the left side of the road and inadequate visibility on the right side. On curves, visibility was inadequate.
The high beams tell the same story; visibility was rated as fair on the left side of the road, but inadequate on the right. On curves, visibility was inadequate in all four tests. All said, the Volkswagen Atlas earned a marginal rating in the headlight category overall.
The headlight safety category seems to be the deal breaker in achieving the Top Safety Pick+ designation, and vehicles with optional headlight upgrades that pass the rigorous tests have earned the “+” designation. Visit the IIHS website to learn more about how the institute conducts these tests. The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas starts at $30,500 MSRP for the S 2.0L turbo trim level, and can cost as much as $48,490 MSRP for the SEL Premium with 4Motion AWD. The optional front crash protection system is standard on the Atlas SE trim, which starts at $34,990 MSRP.
