SPIED: 2019/2020 Ford Ranger Raptor With Suspension Camo?

Off-Road Midsizer Keeps Its Underpinnings Wrapped

One of Ford’s most anticipated new vehicles is the 2019 Ranger, which was confirmed for reintroduction in Detroit earlier this year. As a rival to the Chevrolet Colorado, the Ranger will almost certainly offer an off-road variant, possibly taking the Raptor name. We’ve had a few peeks at the 2019 or 2020 Ford Ranger “Raptor” before, but today’s spyshots prove how serious Ford is at hiding details of the ZR2 fighter.

In addition to the defensive engineer driving the truck (he allegedly challenged our ace photographer to a fight), this Ranger Raptor mule also sports what must be the first application of suspension camouflage we’ve ever seen. Spotted wrapping the rear axle and some chassis components, all we were able to ascertain is tough-looking shock absorbers behind the wheels. Wrapping those wheels are 285/70R17–sized BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires, the same meats found on the F-150 Raptor. The whole kit rides higher than other Ranger prototypes we’ve seen, and there’s a wider track and flared fenders on offer as well.

One design feature not easily hidden by camouflage is this test mule’s engine note, which the photographer said sounded like the Power Stroke 3.2L turbodiesel I-5 found in the Ford Transit van. Putting out 185 hp and 350 lb-ft, the small Power Stroke engine would give the Ranger a credible alternative to the Colorado ZR2’s available 2.8L Duramax I-4 (rated at 181 hp and 369 lb-ft).

Hopefully the small Raptor will also offer one of Ford’s EcoBoost engines, perhaps the 325hp, 400–lb-ft 2.7L V-6. That engine, which provides reasonable performance in the larger F-150, would give a Ranger-sized truck spectacular performance, clobbering the ZR2’s standard 3.6L V-6 into the ground in terms of maximum torque.
Thought to follow the regular Ranger pickup to market by about a year, we expect the Raptor variant to arrive for the 2020 model year, sharing showroom space with both the Ranger and its midsize SUV sibling, the Bronco. By the way, will that vehicle get a hardcore off-road variant too? The thought of three Raptorized vehicles in Ford’s stable is enough to stimulate anyone’s appetite.
