Cummins Starts Sales of Repower R2.8 Turbodiesel Crate Engine
Small-Displacement Diesel I-4 Perfect for Jeeps and Small Pickups
Cummins announced it had begun selling the first engine in its Repower crate series, the R2.8 turbodiesel I-4. Marketed directly to the consumer, the engine takes its architecture from a global powerplant used in industrial equipment, small trucks, and commercial vehicles; however, the R2.8 is tailored specifically for use in a variety of aftermarket platforms.
Cummins includes almost everything needed to get the engine running, including a power steering pump, alternator, vacuum pump, grid heater, diesel oxidation catalyst, wiring harness, engine computer, accelerator pedal, OBD-II port, and digital gauges. Installing an R2.8 isn’t totally idiot-proof, as the owner will need to source or custom-build engine mounts and a compatible transmission, among other auxiliaries and critical systems.
We’ve seen the R2.8 used in Fred Williams’ famous Jeep Wrangler TJ (nicknamed Tube Sock), but Cummins says the crate engine would be good for any platform that needs a clean-burning, torquey powerplant. Producing 161 hp and 267 lb-ft, the R2.8 would be a heady improvement on most compact trucks built in the 20th century, and turning up the wick just a bit would yield a mighty fun hot rod engine as well.
Cummins says the R2.8 passed the EPA’s Tier 0 and Tier 1 emissions standards, generally meaning the engine is suitable for light-duty trucks as new as 1999. Obviously, local rules and statutes may vary, so be sure to check your area’s emissions regulations before spending your hard-earned dough on a Repower engine.
Speaking of dough, Cummins will ask $8,999 for an R2.8, which is a good amount of money for sure, but it’s not bad for a factory-backed crate engine with an impressive level of emissions certification. And if the 2.8 isn't enough engine for your tastes, Cummins is also surveying folks to decide which engine will be the next in the Repower series. R5.0 V-8, anyone?
