Volkswagen’s new midsize three-row family SUV, the Atlas, is set to receive a couple of new brothers and sisters next year. Back in November Volkswagen filed for U.S. trademarks on the names Atlas Allsport and Atlas Cross Sport. In a statement made at a teaser event for the Mk7 VW Jetta, CEO of Volkswagen North America Hinrich Woebcken said the Atlas family is set to expand, hinting that the idea of a coupe SUV is on the table.

Additionally, CEO Woebcken mentioned that VW is intent on making another small SUV for the U.S. market, based on the Tiguan. While the details on both the Atlas line and new small SUV are scarce, we do have a few hints as to what we can expect to see from Volkswagen SUV engineers next year.

First off, with names like Allsport and Cross Sport we assume that the additions to the Atlas line are going to be focused on attracting a more outdoorsy, utility-based audience. Vehicles with similar names share similar characteristics, for example the Audi Allroad is a rugged take on their A4 wagon and the Subaru Crosstrek is like an Impreza wagon made for off-road travel, like the Outback. As far as the Tiguan is concerned, there’s a Tiguan short wheelbase that’s popular in Europe, and the Tiguan Limited is due for a serious upgrade or even replacement.

While an off-road–focused vehicle has been absent from the Volkswagen line for quite some time, the Atlas has serious potential for off-road capability. Take Tanner Foust’s SEMA project Atlas, which is something we’d like to take a spin in. Keep checking fourwheeler.com for updates on Volkswagen’s new SUV moves.
