Teased: 2019 Toyota RAV4 for the New York International Auto Show

Small SUV Gets a Sleek, Highlander-Aping Profile

Mar 15, 2018
Toyota will reveal an all-new 2019 RAV4 at the 2018 New York International Auto Show this month, and the company released its first teaser image for the small SUV.
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 looks like it’s getting a bolder, somewhat sleeker design than the current model. Key differences between the two start with a bluff front end on the new one, compared to 2018’s low, angular hood. The new RAV’s greenhouse looks like it’s bigger as well, a boon for outward visibility. And while the current crossover has relatively upright rear glass and a squared-off tailgate, the new RAV4 will get a more dramatic, sloping rear end.

In profile, the vehicle reminds us a lot of the FT-AC concept from the 2017 Los Angeles Auto show. That vehicle was a unibody sport-ute with torque-vectoring all-wheel drive and a four-wheel lock feature to enhance traction in slippery conditions. Were those features to transition into the RAV4, we’d be getting a crossover with some legitimate off-road aspirations, and it would give Toyota a competitor for the similarly rugged Subaru Outback and Forester crossovers.
While it’s not the rugged, minimalistic off-roader we were hoping for, if the 2019 RAV4 adds even a little all-terrain capability, we’ll be satisfied. Toyota will livestream the reveal of the small SUV March 28 at 9:10 a.m. at this website.
