SPIED: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Towing and Interior Photos

All-New Cabin from 2019 Silverado 1500 Carries Over Mostly Unchanged

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD was spotted over the weekend lugging a particularly large trailer, and the fullsize truck’s interior was partially unwrapped long enough for our brave photographer to snap off a few pics. Given what we see in the photos, it appears the all-new Silverado HD, due in 2020, will retain many of the trappings of its 2019 light-duty brother.

Carrying much of its general design over from the 2014-2018 Silverado, the new interior will likely be of higher quality than its predecessor, which is a good thing. A central touchscreen display sits between two HVAC vents, and the gauge cluster looks like it retains its six-dial functionality, with a tachometer and speedometer bookending readouts for voltage, coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. The Silverado HD will also likely continue to use a column-mounted gear selector, keeping center console space open without resorting to buttons or a selector knob as on some fullsize trucks.
However, the new interior is hobbled somewhat by its dated design, with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen swimming in a sea of black and silver plastic that makes it appear even smaller. Furthermore, the high dashboard and beltlines are hard for shorter drivers to see over. On the other hand, current Chevrolet Silverado HD drivers will likely feel right at home in this new truck, minimizing confusion for loyal owners.

The subject of our photography was also towing a three-axle horse trailer with a gooseneck hitch. Weighing in excess of 7,000 pounds empty, the trailer likely only scratches the surface of the truck’s towing capacity, enabled by what is likely a carryover Duramax L5P 6.6L turbodiesel V-8. Still, don’t expect world-beating numbers from the new truck in terms of towing and payload ratings; General Motors doesn’t seem as concerned with one-upping as Ford and Ram do, focusing instead on a consistent, safe towing experience.
The 2020 Silverado HD, which will sport unique front styling compared to the 2019 Silverado 1500, should make its formal debut at next year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Until then, what features do you want to see the new truck adopt?
