Ford and Volkswagen May Collaborate on 2025 Ranger and Amarok Pickups

Commercial Vehicle Joint Venture Could Lead to a U.S.-Market Amarok

Aug 7, 2018
Ford Motor Company announced in June that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Volkswagen AG, and the first evidence of that possible partnership could be the 2025 Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger pickups.

The companies “are exploring potential projects across a number of areas—including developing a range of commercial vehicles together to better serve the evolving needs of customers,” according to a Ford press release. Speaking to Australian media outlet GoAuto, Volkswagen Group Australia Managing Director Michael Bartsch insinuated the Amarok could be part of that strategic alliance.
“All options are being looked at,” he said. “All avenues are being explored…What I think is very clear is, to be competitive in Australia, we have to get the cost base of Amarok down.”

Bartsch also said that if the companies did indeed enter into a joint venture on commercial vehicles, then each brand’s DNA and identity would have to shine through the product. He also appreciated the local-market Ford Ranger’s prowess, specifically calling out the Raptor performance model.

If the 2025 Volkswagen Amarok is indeed built alongside the Ford Ranger, there’s a chance the pickup could come to the U.S. The current Ranger’s successors will likely be globally developed products, with many common suspension, powertrain, and styling elements for the U.S. and other markets. If the Amarok shares enough with a federalized future Ranger, it could make an appearance in U.S. showrooms as a utility offering alongside Volkswagen’s family crossovers and sedans.

Of course, nothing is set in stone, as the companies have merely entered into a loose understanding, not a hard-and-fast agreement, and the midsize pickup tie-up is mere rumor. But that won’t stop us from salivating at the idea of a Lapiz Blue Volkswagen Amarok R built around Ranger Raptor bones.
