Recently formed GM Defense, a division of General Motors, is working on a concept military vehicle built around the Chevrolet Silverado platform. According to a video GM Defense posted on its website, the truck features a Hydrotec hydrogen fuel cell. The technology was developed for General Motors as an affordable fuel cell power solution for land, air, and sea applications.

General Motors hasn’t said much about the Hydrotec fuel cells. We know they have been extensively testing the fuel cells for several years. The ZH2 will be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and hydrogen tanks.

In 2017, General Motors developed a Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 with the Hydrotec fuel cell technology as a project with the United States Army. Information on the GM defense website states the Silverado version of the truck can operate with zero emissions, reduced thermal signature, and for ten times longer on a single recharge. It also boasts the truck can handle power-intensive payloads on a versatile off-road chassis.

The video shows the Silverado ZH2 crawling over rocks and driving up steep dirt hills. The all-wheel-drive suspension can go through deep mud to keep it moving. The ZH2 can withstand extreme temperatures and weather conditions such as major snowstorms. The Colorado ZR2 uses DSSV Multimatic suspension technology, and it appears the Silverado ZH2 will use the same technology.
The video also shows a rescue configuration, presumably with all the gear needed to treat injured soldiers or head into the scene of a disaster. While the Chevrolet ZH2 is only a concept vehicle, a real version could be coming to a battlefield in the future.
