Afterhours #5: Gymkhana TEN - It’s Worth Your 20 Minutes
Hoonitruck, Hoonicorn…and Hoonifriends…
It might be the strangest New Year’s goal ever, but I think that in order to stay hip, up-to-the-minute, and in-the-know, one must know what’s trending on YouTube. And so there it is. My goal is to be more familiar with that’s trending on the great interwebs, because wasting time getting dumber by watching cat fails is truly a noble cause. Actually, my objective is to seek out videos that may somehow be applicable to the tastes of truck enthusiasts.
In today’s search—my second day in a row, thank you very much—I came upon Gymkhana TEN: Ultimate Tire Slaying Tour, which happened to by #37 on the YouTube trending feed after spending a short time on Amazon Prime Video exclusively. To give it a click was a no-brainer; committing to watching the 19-minute viral video took only an additional few seconds. What the heck, 6.1 million views and a lineup of comments that are actually complimentary (including my favorite, “I will do it on public streets right now”) must mean it was respectable. Plus, we all know the badass reputation of the Gymkhana videos.
The first vehicle introduced to get its 295/30R18 Toyos shredded was the Hoonicorn V2, a 1965 Ford Mustang with a 6.7L twin-turbo V-8 producing 1400 hp and 1250 lb-ft of torque. Next was the WRC Fiesta, a 380hp turbocharged 1.6L 2018 Ford Fiesta on 245/40R18 Toyo Tires. Then came The Cossie, a 645hp turbocharged 2.0L 1991 Ford Escort RS Cosworth running 225/40R18 Toyos. Fourth to get some quick screen time was the Focus RS RX, a 650hp turbocharged 2.0L 2017 Ford Focus sporting 245/40R18 Toyos. Last but not least was the one that really resonates with us truck people—the Hoonitruck, a twin-turbocharged 3.5L 1977 Ford F-150 producing 914 hp and 702 lb-ft of 315/35R20 Toyo–roasting torque.
The plotline, if indeed one can look beyond the smoking tires and screaming high-strung engines, was that Ken Block drifts the five vehicles in five different locations throughout the world. The Fiesta saw some picturesque snow drifting in Sweden; the Mustang visited Detroit; the Focus took a spin in Guanajuato, Mexico; the Cossie hooned in Los Angeles; and the Hoonitruck let loose on Route 66 in Shamrock, Texas. (Fast-forward to 12:45 if you want to skip the cars and get straight to the Hoonitruck.) To add to the fun, Block invited some friends to join in: Oliver Solberg, Rob Dyrdek, Aaron Kaufman, Sasquatch, and Travis Pastrana.
Although it’s a cinematic work of art that took two years to complete, I like that it wasn’t overdone. There was no background music, allowing the sound of the engines their rightful place as the main noisemakers. The slow motion and special effects were tasteful and not annoying or distracting. My favorite part: the in-cab shots of upshifting and downshifting in the Hoonitruck, accompanied by a dash readout indicating the gear. Take a break from Christmas shopping, give the cat videos a rest, and watch Gymkhana TEN if you haven’t already.
