Rivian Electric Trucks Disguised as F-150s
There have been dozens of sightings of what people are describing as electric Ford F-150 trucks throughout the Detroit area. Several websites have reported strange things going on with the F-150. One such site had a spy photo of an F-150 plugged in with the power cable running out of the front grille. Turns out, Rivian is hiding their electric components in the Fords for testing.
In a recent interview with the Detroit Free Press, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said key components of its trucks, which include batteries, have been hidden underneath used Ford F-150 bodies during testing. “We need something to keep the weather out while we put a lot of miles on our skateboard, so they’re driving around in Detroit right now, too. They’re all over the place, but nobody knows. We’re very quiet about that,” Scaringe said. He also mentioned Rivian had no corporate connection to Ford. Scaringe said Rivian used the F-150 because the wheelbase is the same size.
Rivian debuted both a truck and SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year. Amazon recently announced a $700 million investment in the company. Scaringe moved Rivian to Detroit in 2013 from Florida to be closer to the heart of the automotive industry. Ford has not publicly commented on Rivian’s activities.
